Man, that’s a tough question.
In fact, it’s a minefield frought with danger but I’m over it.
Here’s the thing…. I found myself rooting for Woods this weekend. In fact, I felt myself rooting for him more than any other time I watched him play. When he started to lose his grip on the back nine, I stopped watching the tournament and went outside to trim my trees.
I found myself questioning my new found interest in his success. Why did I want this guy to win? I clearly like Rory Mcilroy, and it’s not just because his name sounds like Roy Mcevoy. Rory is an all round good kid. He’s a good person. He looks to be everything Tiger wasn’t.
I am a husband with two kids. I think people who cheat on their wife are pathetic losers. (Just get a divorce if you are unhappy)
So why was I cheering for Woods?
After much debate, I came to a couple realizations about myself:
1) I hate dynasties. They’re boring and pretentious. I hate the Yankees. I hate the Patriots. I hate the Spurs.
2) I love underdogs. They inspire me.
3) I feel his pain. I know what it’s like to be at the top and then be back at the bottom. It’s worse than never being at the top to start with. It hurts more.
So….when I got clear on these realizations it became obvious why I was cheering for Tiger. He IS the underdog now. He is NO LONGER a sure thing. In fact, up until this tournament, he was the most baffling sports train-wreck I have ever seen. He might be the biggest fall from grace in history if he doesn’t right the ship.
Is he a good person? I am unsure.
Did he act like an ass? Absolutely.
Are people allowed to make mistakes. Yep.
Can they change? I don’t know. Ask Michael Vick.
All I can say is this: I am officially a Tiger fan. I was a mere admirer when he was at the top. I want to see if he has true heart. I want to see if he can clear his conscience and win when people hate him. That would really be something.
Go Tiger Go.
